JUST A BLARING ANNOUNCEMENT

I HATE CHANGE!

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ve probably figured this out.  In his book, The Road Less Traveled, M. Scott Peck cites resistance to change as the cause of all mental disorders.  This is not true, actually.  Most mental illness is caused by a genetic defect, not in the brain itself, but in the chemistry of the brain.  The worst (most subjective, least professional, most inexperienced, and least compassionate) therapist I’ve ever had in my life did (like anyone else) have some good ideas.  She compared the brain to a computer–the brain is a computer, after all.  In response to my question regarding the difference between mental retardation and mental illness, she made this analogy: In the brain of a person with mental retardation, there is a defect in the hardware; in the brain of a person with mental illness, there is a defect in the software.  And I think that is quite accurate.

Mental illness would be more aptly named “emotional illness”.  The majority of people with mental illness tend to have above-average intelligence, in fact.  I even suspect that above-average intelligence actually aggravates the symptoms of mental illness.  One cannot think too much, as M. Scott Peck states.  And I agree.  But perhaps one can think too much about the “wrong” things.

There are certainly people with mental illness who are out of touch with reality–delusional, psychotic.  And this is not exactly an emotional problem.  But for most of us, mental illness is definitely an illness of the emotions.  This is why the mentally ill suffer more than anyone else in the world.  There is no physical pain that can compare to emotional pain.  There is no physical turmoil that can compare to emotional turmoil.

Yet I digress–perhaps another symptom of my mental illness, perhaps not.

Resistance to change is not the cause of all mental disorders.  However, it can be a symptom.  And it can aggravate one’s mental illness.  Certainly the more I resist change, the more emotionally-tormented I become.  Change is a part of life–it always has been.

BUT MUST CHANGE–IN MY LIFE, AND IN THE WORLD AROUND ME–ALWAYS BE FOR THE WORSE, AND NEVER FOR THE BETTER?

THIS IS WHY I HATE CHANGE.

Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities begins with the statement: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…”  This has always been the case, in our 100,000 year history.  Yet since all things in this world do come to an end, so will this duality in human existence.  There will never be only a “best of times” for us, in this universe.  But there will definitely be only a “worst of times”.  For all of our history, people have shouted, “The end is near!”  Of course, they’ve always been mistaken.  Yet I truly believe these “prophets of doom” are no longer mistaken.  The end really is near, this really is the worst of times only, and it will continue to get worse.  We just don’t notice it, because it’s happening so slowly.

Three primary factors are the beginning of the end, for us: Digital-Age technology, exponentially-increasing overpopulation, and climate change.

Our species has endured climate change before.  But not in addition to Digital-Age technology and exponentially-increasing overpopulation–with both of which we are really destroying ourselves.

Can we prevent our destruction?  Can we change anything for the better?  Only if all 7 billion (going on 11 billion) of us make the necessary changes.

And sadly, this is not likely to occur.

God help us–really.  We certainly seem incapable of helping ourselves.
