ANTHONY HERVEY’S LAST SPEECH

ARLENE BARNUM SPEAKS

DIGITAL-AGE DECADENCE

Queen’s “We Are The Champions” was the graduation theme song for the class of 1984 at Murphy High School, in Mobile, Alabama.  It was probably the graduation theme song for numerous classes before that, since it was released in 1977.  I was among six commencement speakers chosen by the senior and junior classes for the ceremony–at which the Murphy High School chorus sang the song, accompanied by the Murphy High School band.

“We Are The Champions” is not even one of my favorite Queen songs, let alone my favorite songs, in general.  The lyrics are simpler than those of my favorite Queen songs–and the music is not nearly as complex.  Yet note the passionate singing of Freddie Mercury–and the unforgettable instrumentation of the band, particularly the electric-guitar artistry.  And note the raw, wild, real, personal, sincere, human interaction between the band and the audience.

Yes, this is the kind of music that was played at graduation ceremonies and sporting events before the Digital Age.

No, this is not a commercial–this is the kind of music that is played at graduation ceremonies and sporting events in this Digital Age.  There is no band–all of the music is digitally programmed, and electronically produced.  And the lyrics are not just simple–they’re totally simplistic, and indescribably trite.  The singing isn’t passionate at all–it’s completely contrived.  And there is no interaction with an audience because the only audience is an unseen collective of smartphone addicts–none of whom are even interacting with each other.

This is Digital-Age decadence.

TOUGH TALK FOR JEWS AND CHRISTIANS

“If you think there is no God, you’d better be right!”

That’s tough talk, though certainly valid.

Let’s look at some more tough, though valid, talk:

If you think God favors you over all other peoples of the earth simply because of your shared ancestry, you’d better be right!

If you think God favors you over all other peoples of the earth simply because of your shared belief, you’d better be right!

FOR THE SAKE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

This year is the centennial of American (United States) imperialism–it marks the 100th anniversary of President Woodrow Wilson’s act of forcing New-World intervention into an Old-World war.

President Wilson began the tradition of forcing U.S. troops to fight other countries’ wars–President Harry Truman began the tradition of forcing U.S. troops to fight other countries’ wars without a declaration of war by the U.S. Congress.  Both of these traditions have been carried out by both Democratic and Republican presidents–into the current presidential administration.

What’s especially ironic is that the Republican Party, which was formed in 1854 for the purpose of U.S. imperialism (Abraham Lincoln, the first Republican president of the United States, started the draft (selective service) in the United States (Republican President Richard Nixon ended it)) was not the political party that initiated this practice of forcing U.S. troops to fight other countries’ wars, with or without a declaration of war by the U.S. Congress–both Woodrow Wilson and Harry Truman were Democrats.

In fact, the majority of U.S. presidents who have forced U.S. troops to fight other countries’ wars–or kept U.S. troops abroad who were sent by previous U.S. presidents–have been Democrats.

This is yet another reason–among countless reasons–for American voters to abandon both the Democratic and Republican Parties.

Abandon them both–for the sake of the United States of America.

VICTIMS OF THIS GODLESS DIGITAL AGE

In my fifty-one years of age

I have never encountered such inhumanity

In humanity

Such inhuman

Humans

As in this godless Digital Age.

And this is why I know

That as we true humans remaining

Die

Victims of this godless Digital Age

The death of human civilization

Of which every holy book

And every holy man

Has ever spoken

Will occur.

And this godless Digital Age

Will finally be damned

For all eternity.

Thank God.
