A WORD TO SOUTHERN AMERICANS

Nothing in this world is ever simple, no matter how much we’d like it to be. Everything in this world is always complex–and often complicated.

The past is never simple–it’s always complex.

The antebellum period in our country’s past is complex.  The War between the Confederate States of America and the United States of America is complex. And the aftermath of that War is complex.

When we allow politicians to censor flags and monuments representative of our country’s past, especially without our consent, we deny ourselves any understanding of our country’s past–in all its complexity.

Likewise, the present is never simple–it’s always complex.

The crisis in the Middle East is complex.  The Israel of today is not the Israel of Biblical times–and its establishment in 1948, as well as its continuing expansion, is the primary cause of the crisis in the Middle East.  Our federal government’s overwhelming support of the modern state of Israel is hurting the American people, as well as the Palestinian people.

When we accept our federal government’s overwhelming support of the modern state of Israel, especially without questioning it, we deny ourselves any understanding of the crisis in the Middle East–in all its complexity.

Nothing in this world is ever simple, no matter how much we’d like it to be. Everything in this world is always complex–and often complicated.
