FROM THE BOQ: BUSINESS, POLITICS AND ETHICS #69

Another question from Gregory Stock’s book is this:

How would it affect your opinion of your best friend if you discovered that he or she had made an airline reservation for the heavily overbooked Christmas holidays not in order to fly somewhere, but in order to get a free ticket by volunteering to be bumped from the flight?

I’d be impressed!

He or she would be getting a free ticket to fly somewhere–at a later date.

In doing this, would my best friend be stealing from an airline, or simply taking advantage of it?

It doesn’t matter.

An airline is a corporation.

And all corporations (with the possible exception of nonprofit corporations) steal from, or at least take advantage of, individuals.

Furthermore, a corporation is a thing, not a person.

And it is not wrong to steal from, or take advantage of, a thing that steals from, or takes advantage of, people.
